Christopher the Penguin*, and Fluffy*
Have you ever had a childhood animal that you were attached to, and still are???? In my case I have two very close animals that till this day I cannot sleep with out.Its a feeling of safety, and being home. It keeps me feeling like nothing could ever go wrong. When my bad days come I just lay in bed and snuggle. These animals are a special gift that were given to me by my great grandmother when i was born. One of them is a Penguin, and the other is a dog. I belive many of us still hold on to special things from when we were little because of the fact it gives us a feeling of back then, and something that meant so much to us and its a 'comfortable" thing and feeling.Many things which we did when we were younger come back and affect us some how later in life. Everyone has something that they do and have. Many of us had blankies and animals, many of which people now bring away with them to school or even when they move out. In my case being so far away from home it is my feeling of home and my family.=)
It's Over!!
6 weeeks later and 6 new girls laterr... The time had finally came to call it the end. After 6 loong weeks of new member education we can finnally accept 6 wonderful lovely new ladies into our sisterhood=) Their long hard work and dedication has shown us that they know what our sorority is all about and what we stand for. The new memeber process,is a time for the new members to learn what it is like being with different types of people and working together.It's about dedication and being togther. The girls of the Spring Pledge Class of 2007 have earned their letters and will become great sisters...=) Congratsss...

Quiet Time
Lately I have been feeeling quite busy and sometimes to busy to even function and think clearly. Sometimes i wish i could just press pause on my life,and stop everything that is going on around me and have time to myself. I feel like im going to explode at times, and try to keep myself sane. So much to do so little time. How much do you value the time we have in a day?? Have you ever thought about it... To be honest I never really had an issue with time, until I started college. Now I feel trapped in my own body waiting to escape and finish everything that needs to be done. Im exhausted, & overworked.I think its time for some QUIET TIME. We all have our own idea of what quiet time means to us some of us its reading a book,watching a movie,taking a nap, or even just going for a walk.
Change
Instead of complaining about things we don't like, we should make the effort to try to chnage it. If you do not feel the need to try and change something, then I do not think that you are entitled to complain about it. In life, there are many things that we may not like or agree with. If you have a bad attitude about something you cant change, nothing will ever get better. If you change your attitude about the situation, you might learn to deal with it. When people complain about things nothign gets resolved. It is just annoying and it is something that people do when they dont ffel like fixing the problem. TRY TO CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE!!!
Chains.
My chains being my parentsand living under their rules for so long, then moving away and having no boundaries its like something is missing. After 18 years of having someone to answer to and now having no one to respond to, and being on my own it feels like a kind of emptiness that cannot be filled. It was a feeling of being comfortable something that was always there and now is no longer there. Being at home and having your routinely schedule for so many years then breaking away from that routine, feels like it messes everything up.

What Should I Do FiRST!
After we read John's discussion board comment, it made me think. He makes a good point. I am one of those students who feels like I am running into a million directions at once. I am one who is used to structure and focusing on one main thing,not 5 different things at once. I have felt this way for a while. Sometimes I feel like i can't put my best effort into one thing, because I get frustrated when I think about everything else I have to do. Prof. Marsh don't get me wrong I think your doing a great job!! I really enjoy this class, but I do get very frustrated. I try to visit the writing center as often as possible for help. I'm very used to knowing exactly how the prof. grades and how to pretty much keep track of my progress. Sometimes I feel like I never know how I'm doing in this class, and never know my progress. I'm not writing this to complain. You asked us to write how we felt!!Like your quote said you gave us about CHANGE. If you don't like something try to change it. If you can't change it don't complain.=)

People who can do so much to try to put us on the right path in life, but sometimes it is up to us to try to get ourselves on the right path and break any habits we have. People can help guide us in the right direction, but when it comes to reaching our Intelligent Self-Direction, only we can do it.

Final Draft:Dorm Life

3 Strikes Your Out!
I will never forget my first night sleeping in my new room, at St. Johns. For the first time in 18 years, I had to sleep knowing that my parents were not in the other room. The main question that ran through my head was “Was I safe?” Moving away from home, a place where I felt safe for so long was a major step. Safety here at St. Johns is taken very seriously, especially because it is a Catholic university. Living in a Catholic residential village we have many rules that may seem harsh, but they exist for two reasons. We are Catholic institution and our rules must reflect that and they also reflect the fact that the school is located in Jamaica, New York.
After bad past experiences with a former roommate, I fully understand why these rules exist. My former roommate, Diana, would sneak people in through the fire exit, and do illegal things inside of the room. She would bring people into our room that did not attend St. Johns and had put me and my other roommate in uncomfortable situations. After her third offense, she was asked to transfer into another residential hall. She decided the rules were not for her and withdrew from St. Johns. According to St. John’s rules and regulations, after three infractions you are asked to leave the dorms.
The rules that are in affect at St. Johns University are derived from the Vincentian mission. They are in place to encourage moral values and a healthy environment. Many students that attend St. Johns University are not Catholic, but while selecting a Catholic school, they know that they must follow certain guidelines. (Rules and Regulations)
Catholics, in their every day lives, are always following guidelines. They go about everyday with the values that they have been taught. The Catholic Church does not believe in pre-marital sex, and is St. John’s administration will not condone such behavior at a Catholic university.
I conducted interviews to three students that live on campus. The first question asked was, “What is one rule that you do not agree with for the residential village?”
Jackie Loundy, a freshman here at St. Johns, originally from Florida, said that one rule she would change would be to allow commuters the same privileges as residents. Jackie also mentioned that when a commuter visits the dorms they must leave by midnight, or get fined. The only alternative is to move to Montogoris dining hall. She does not feel like this is right, because we are all students at the same school, but we do not all have the same privileges. Jackie makes a very reasonable point. We are all students here and I also agree that we should all have the same privileges.
Jesse Knapton, a freshman from Saranac Lake, said that one rule he would change would be the visitation policy because he believes we are supposed to be responsible adults who are responsible for our actions. He feels trapped, and also feels that as more rules are made, the more prone he is to break them. I feel like this is an unproductive way of thinking of things. If you want something changed say how you feel and talk to someone in residential life.
Daniella Staropoli, a freshman here at St. Johns said that one rule she would change would be the process of signing people in, especially family. Daniella said that she fully understands the reasons behind the rules, but when it comes to family, things should be different. Family is a very important part of our lives, and they should be treated with more respect when visiting. As shun by their responses, these students voice the displeasure with the rules felt by so many residents.

Many dormers get frustrated at times, believing that the rules are there to make us mad and to see how far we can go with out getting caught. Moving from Florida to Jamaica, New York was definitely major transition in my life. It was a shock living in an environment that I was not used to and heard so many negative things about. It makes me feel very comfortable knowing that St. Johns public safety is on call everyday all hours of the day. Many public safety officers are retired NYPD cops, and have much experience in the field of safety. At all times they monitor who is entering and leaving the residential village and this makes me feel comfortable living here.
Attending a Catholic school, involves having a lot of rules. Because Catholics believe in certain things, there are certain rules we must follow that come out of those beliefs. Students who decided to attend a Catholic school knew coming into it that there are certain things that would be expected of them. In the end, the rules and regulations are here to create a safe environment. Considering the neighborhood in which we students live, the rules are here for a visible reason. I sleep better at night knowing that everyone in the residential village is either a St. Johns student or has been approved by public safety.
